I have in mind one child, who has dyspraxia. "Dyspraxia is a developmental disability of organization of movement. It is caused by immaturity of the brain resulting in messages not being properly transmitted to the body. A subtype of Developmental Co-ordination Disorder."
Primary problems
- Clumsy, accident-prone and messy
- Experience a prolonged period of struggle in attempting to master new skills
- Particular difficulty carrying out co-ordinated actions smoothly and actions to a timed sequence
- Poor posture
- Difficulty integrating learned motor skills with other skills and generalizing skills
Children with dyspraxia may show lack of self-belief, lack of confidence, anxiety, stress, and refusal to interact or lack of practice.
HOW CAN I HELP
- List all areas of difficulty
- Make sure a skill is developmentally appropriate
- Break down task
- Practice skills lots of times
- Set goals, plan, do and check for the student
- Encourage the child
- Set a system for checking off steps as they are accomplished
- Give one direction at a time
- Rehearse what the child has learned on a regular basis
Handwriting
- Large-scale lines
- Mind Maps, Thinking Maps
- Photocopy books and highlight information
- Lesson notes taking by the classroom assistant
Reading
- Large print text
- Use of audiotapes of set books
Setting out for work
- Colored dots. (green for starting place, red for the finish)
- Time (digital watches)
- Cue cards to help sequence of task
- Diary
- Lists
Some Assistive Technology I had mentioned it before. I believe, they will be a good match for a student with Dyspraxia. Voice Threat, Classkick. Another great tool the Dyspraxia Foundation.
